Compots (2)

Hippodamia x C aclandiae

Hippodamia is B nodosa x C aclandiae so this is 3/4 aclandiae
https://www.flickr.com/gp/richmonda/a0M6Q0

can take very bright light... will rot if wet overnight

5/31/15 Divided up one compot. Ended up with
- net basket with 3 mounts in it (3)
- 3" round pot with 3 plants in it (3)
- meleleuca mount (3)
- oak mount (3)
- frame (1)
- 2" square pots (4)
- 2" round net pots, 3-4 plants in each of 8 pots (runts) (25). Diff mixes in each: some aliflor, some charcoal, some fern, some mixes

total of roughly 42 plants. The plants were in great shape with terrific roots and there was very little breakage or loss during the potting and mounting.

7/11/15 divided second compot

Tried to leave small plants attached to big ones so there are quite a few doubles. Took five largest and mounted on a big piece of cinnamon wood (from spice woods at BC). Two went into 2.5" round and 12 or so into 2" square pots. Pots are filled with peanut on bottom and 50/50 fine charcoal/sponge rock. Very very light media. One big one went into hanging basket with nothing but big charcoal chunks.
.

6/7/15 after a week on the potting bench they look OK so far. Put a few on front yard benches to get more light, spread some out on seedling benches to try different exposures, and put the basket with some mounts in it on the cat chain next to the vandas.

6/28/15 the mounted ones seems to be doing the best

12/23/15 mounted ones great, hanging pots OK, pots on benches in shade dead :(

Growing notes:
Needs to be dry - wet roots will rot and plants will die! aclandiae likes a drier winter so try that. Cattleya Source ( http://cattleya.wikidot.com/cattleya-aclandiae ) says: "Cattleya aclandiae is frequently grown mounted on cork slabs or in baskets, but some growers report success using pots with extremely open fast draining medium such as coarse bark nuggets. Whatever the choice of medium, it is critically important that the roots dry rapidly after watering or root rot is a near certainty. Use very small slabs for mounting this species because larger slabs retain to much water. Tree-fern slabs hold more water and should only be used only in very dry growing conditions. When mounting, do not use sphagnum moss between the mount and the plant because it retains too much moisture and promotes rot. Divide, repot, or remount only when new root growth is just starting. This lets the plant become established in the shortest possible time with the greatest success."
